Built into a different downtown hillside, the Roman Theater is a 6,000-capacity, 2nd-century stone amphitheater offering occasional events.
Overnight in Amman.
After having breakfast at your hotel then check out and depart from Amman to Petra. On the way, first stop along the way is Madaba, where St George's Greek Orthodox Church houses a famous floor mosaic from the 6th century AD. The mosaic illustrates the pilgrimage from the surrounding areas to the Holy Land; you will be able to find Egypt on the map.
Our next visit is to Mount Nebo, where you will find a memorial to Musa (Moses) and a 4th-century church that Italian Franciscan priests excavated and restored in 1933.
Afterwards, we continue toward Kerak along the famous ancient biblical caravan route known as The King's Way. We make a short stop at Wadi Al-Mujib, a great, wide valley with magnificent geological formations that will take your breath away. After a photo break, we continue to Kerak (krakmoba; kier Moab) the ancient, biblical capital of the Moabites, which the bible mentions several times; Kerak has become well known for its famous Crusaders' castle built in 1132/34 AD by King Baldwin I of Jerusalem. We explore the castle and see the amazing underground halls and museum. At the end of the tour, we will drive to Petra, and our guide assists with checking you in to your hotel.
Petra is a famous archaeological site in Jordan's southwestern desert. Dating to around 300 B.C., it was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. Accessed via a narrow canyon called Al Siq, it contains tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, earning its nickname, the "Rose City." Perhaps its most famous structure is 45m-high Al Khazneh, a temple with an ornate, Greek-style facade, and known as The Treasury
Overnight in Petra.
You will enjoy with your breakfast at your hotel then you will be picked up for exploring the Rose Red City of Petra. The city is thought to have been first established in the 6th century BC by Nabataean Arabs, a nomadic tribe who settled in the area and laid the foundations of a commercial empire that extended into Syria. Despite successive attempts by the Seleucid king Antigonus, the Roman emperor Pompey and Herod the Great to bring Petra under the control of their respective empires.
Petra remained largely in Nabataean hands until around 100 AD, when the Romans diverted to the north the caravan routes that had brought Petra its wealth. It was still inhabited during the Byzantine period, when the former Roman Empire moved its focus east to Constantinople, but declined in importance thereafter. The Crusaders constructed a fort there in the 12th century, but soon withdrew, leaving Petra to the local people until the early 19th century, when it was visited by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. The approach to Petra is unforgettable, made either on foot or horseback through the Outer Siq and then on foot through the Siq itself. The Siq ends in an open space which is dominated by the Treasury, Petra's most famous building. A local guide will give a brief history of the city. You will also see Pharaoh's Castle, the Triumphal Arch, the Amphitheater and Monastery before returning to your hotel.
Overnight in Petra.
After breakfast a full day visit to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth where you will float like a boat! You will have time at leisure and relaxation at the Dead Sea Beach. Late afternoon, drive back to Amman for a panoramic City tour (1.5--2hrs. No Entrance Fees)
The Dead Sea – bordering Israel, the West Bank and Jordan – is a salt lake whose banks are more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. Its famously hypersaline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments at area resorts. The surrounding desert offers many oases and historic sites.
